St Peters, NSW: Murals of Industrial Things Past

IN the 1840s the suburb of St Peters was deemed one of the most fashionable and aristocratic suburbs in Sydney Town. By the 1890s there had been some changes…many of the grand houses were still around but now it was better known for being the location of a productive complex of brick pits. 50 years later these got turned into a huge council tip.

The northern side of what was St Peters Tip, in Campbell Street—now the centre of a big expressway/interchange—has been adorned with some colourful murals of historical local commercial enterprises, a memento of some of the light industry and factories (many automotive) that use to thrive in St Peters in the 1960s. Above and below are snapshots of the big, vivid canvas panels on display.
